The Chancellor Dunning Lecture was established in 1946 with a gift from an anonymous donor whose intention was to create a permanent tribute to Chancellor Charles A. Dunning and to promote understanding and appreciation of the supreme importance of the dignity, freedom and responsibility of the individual person in human society.

Ralph Nader, the former American presidential nominee who some contend was the deciding factor in the 2000 U.S. presidential election, was named by Time magazine as one of the top one-hundred most influential people. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton, followed by his LLB from Harvard Law School. Throughout his life, as a lawyer, activist, presidential candidate, and writer, Nader has advocated and helped produce a cleaner environment, a safer workplace, and a healthier society.
